Alpaca fleece - Properties
Alpaca fleece has many unique properties that make it ideal in bedding, so it is surprising that it has only recently been fully developed.
Softness
Alpaca fleece is very soft to touch due to its very smooth fibre surface. Its incredible softness is alpacas' outstanding and notable feature. The difference in softness is immediately apparent if you touch alpaca fleece; is significantly softer than wool. In an alpaca quilt, this means that the quilt has a dramatically better softness and drape to wrap around you during sleep to trap warm air and keep you comfortably warm.
Lightweight & warm
Alpaca fleece is unique in that the fibre is semi hollow which means that alpaca quilts are lighter and warmer than other natural fibre quilts. In a comparison with wool quilts, alpaca quilts have been tested as being approximately 25% warmer, yet they are amazingly lighweight. These tests have confirmed that alpaca quilts have superior thermal efficiency compared to wool quilts. This explains why our alpaca weight actually weigh less than wool quilts, as alpaca quilts do not need to be as heavy to provide you with the same warmth.
Moisture Absorbant
Alpaca fleece can absorb moisture up to 30% of its own weight. Being dry is very important in bedding to maintain warmth in winter and to be cool in summer.
Loft and resiliency
Alpaca quilts have good loft but they rely on the fleeces thermal efficiency rather than sheer bulk to maintain warmth.
Strong and durable
Alpaca fleece is twice as strong as wool, which equates to a durable and hard wearing life Natural and chemical free Alpaca fleece is naturally a clean fibre and unlike sheep's wool does not have Lanolin, which must be chemically removed.
